Setup

Setup plants the ground truth — the public facts a scene or chapter must honour. Its “Establishes” field is the point: what’s true, and known to everyone including the reader.

Establishes facts the chapter must respect.
Setup is where you fix the canon a scene depends on — the public facts that everything after it must be consistent with. Its “Establishes” knowledge-layer field carries those facts.
AffectsThe canon the writing must honour from that beat on — what’s true and known.
Wire itPlace it early, before the beats that depend on those facts. Set “Establishes” to the facts everyone should know.

Use-case variants
  • World setupthe rules or state of the world
  • Situation setupthe specific starting state of a scene
Facts a later beat requires must be established (or revealed) earlier, or the engine flags a plot hole.
