GATE

GATE is the engine of mystery. It sits on a connection and holds a planted fact back from the reader until the exact beat you choose to open it — the difference between a twist that lands and one the reader saw coming a mile off.

GATEOperator
Withholds a planted fact from the reader until a later beat releases it.
GATE is a transformer you drop onto a wire. The fact flows into the top port, but the gate holds it shut — the reader never learns it — until the wire reaches its target beat, where the gate opens and the fact finally becomes known. It’s how you author suspense, foreshadowing, and the precise timing of every reveal, instead of hoping the model remembers to keep a secret.
AffectsThe timing of a reveal, and the length of the suspense span between planting a fact and paying it off. It doesn’t change what happens — only when the reader is allowed to know it.
Wire itWire it from the beat that plants the fact to the beat where it should land, and set Fact to that planted fact’s name. Everything between the two stays in the dark; the reader learns it exactly at the target.
Parameters

Use-case variants
  • Dramatic ironylet the reader in on it but keep a character blind — open the gate to the character, not the reader, so we squirm while they walk into it
  • Late reframeseal a truth at the very start and open it on the last line, re-colouring everything before it (the shape of a story like “The Necklace”)
  • Slow foreshadowplant it early and release it far downstream — the longer the gated span, the bigger the eventual payoff
Never let the narration hint at the gated fact before the release beat — one slip and the mystery collapses.
A gate with no matching plant upstream has nothing to withhold; pair it with the beat that establishes the fact.
